Sphynx Cat: Facts & Trivia

The Sphynx cat is hairless with large ears, and an even bigger personality. They are the product of a natural mutation.

Sphynx Appearance:

Sphynx cats are moderately boned, muscular, medium sized cats weighing 6-12 pounds (2.7-5.4 kg). Most Sphynx cats have peach fuzz covering their skin that makes them feel like chamois.Their other distinguishing characteristic is their large ears.

While fur-less, Sphynx cats do come in almost every color and pattern. It is the pigment of their skin that provides the color and pattern.

Sphynx cats have a lifespan of 8-14 years.

Sphynx Temperament:

Sphynx cats are active clowns that constantly want attention and are very social. When not running around they will want to be in your lap or in bed with you. Because of their lack of fur they are constantly seeking areas of warmth. It is usually a good idea to keep them as indoor cats exclusively, since they have no fur to protect them from the cold.

Despite their lack of fur, they do require a fair amount of grooming. Oil on their skin will build up and stain your furniture if you do not bath them regularly. They also produce more ear wax than most cats, because they do not have any hair to keep out dirt and dust out of their ears.

Sphynx cats are very affection and make excellent therapy cats. They also get along well with kids and other cats.

Other: This breed is recognized by CFA, AFCA, and TICA.
