Somali Cat: Facts & Trivia

The Somali cat is a long haired version of the Abyssinian. They are very active, curious cats that want to be the center of attention.

Somali Appearance: 

Somali cats are svelte, medium sized cats weighing 8-12pounds (3.6-5.4kg). These cats have large, bushy tails that have earned them the nickname of ‘fox cat’.They have big ears and ticked coats that have 4-20 colors on each hair. 

Their fur is very fine textured, giving them a softer coat than most cats. Ruddy, sorrel, blue and fawn are the most common colors for their coat, but they can have up to 28 different colors. 

The Somali is named for the nation Somalia, now Ethiopia. 

Somali cats have a lifespan of 9-13 years.

Somali Temperament: 

Somali cats have a mischievous nature that has been compared to moneys. These are very active, curious cats that are always on the go. They love to play with toys, climb to the highest point in the house and follow their human pets around. 

Somali cats need a lot of attention, so if you are going to be gone for long periods of time it is a good idea to give them a playmate. Somali cats get along well with children and other cats.
