Russian Blue Cat: Facts & Trivia

The Russian Blue (a.k.a. Archangel Blues) is a striking cat with an long, svelte, body and brilliant green eyes. They are a natural breed reportedly from the isles of Archangel in northern Russia.

Russian Blue Appearance: 

Russian Blues are medium sized cats weighing 7-12 pounds (3.2-5.4 kg). They have long, slender bodies. Russian Blues are short hairs with two layers of hair, an undercoat and guard layer that are the same length. The guard layer hair is blue with silver tips that give Russian Blues a sliver, shimmery look. Their fur is extremely dense, plush and soft. It is reported that you can draw patterns in their fur that will stay their until it is brushed away. 

Another striking feature of Russian Blues is their emerald green eyes. These cats can take 3-4 years to mature. 

Russian Blue cats have a lifespan of 10-20 years.

Russian Blue Temperament: 

Russian Blue cats are loving, but can be a bit standoffish especially with strangers. These cats are moderately active and will greet you at the door, but they will not follow you everywhere. They love to play, especially with feather toys and are excellent hunters. 

Russian Blue cats are generally quiet, except when they need something. They also thrive on routine and will let you know if their schedule has been upset. 

Other: Russian Blues are a natural breed that was brought to England by sailors in the 1860s.
